How many tests are there in Speak & Improve?

These longer tests help you practise structured speaking tasks and prepare for real exam-style activities.

Speak & Improve now includes two categories of complete tests.


1. Everyday skills tests

There are five complete Everyday skills tests in Speak & Improve. Each of these tests contains five parts:

Part 1: Answer questions about yourself
This has 6 questions. The first two questions beginning with "Where are you from?" are the same for each test. All the other questions are different.

Part 2: Read aloud
You will see eight sentences and read them aloud.

Part 3: Give a presentation about something personal
You will have one minute to talk about a personal topic. You will read the task and prepare your answer. Then speak for one minute.

Part 4: Give advice or make a recommendation
You will have one minute to talk about some visual information. You will look at the information, prepare your answer and then speak for one minute.

Part 5: Answer questions about a topic.
You will hear five questions about a topic. You will read the task then listen to each question and give your answer. You should speak for 20 seconds for each answer.

2. Advanced skills tests

There are five complete Advanced skills tests in Speak & Improve. Each of these tests contains four parts:

Part 1: Give a presentation about something personal

You will have 1 minute to talk about a topic. You will read the task and prepare what you are going to say. You will have 1 minute to speak.

Part 2: Summarise and discuss
You will hear part of a tutorial with a teacher. You will listen and you will have 40 seconds to summarise the key points.
Then you will hear 3 questions from your classmate around the same topic. You will read each question. After you hear each question, you will have 20 seconds.

Part 3: Help make an informed decision

You receive a text message and some information from a friend, who needs your help to decide about something. You will respond to your friend’s request by leaving a voice message where you evaluate the information and decide whether it fits your friend’s requirements. You will have 90 seconds to recommend what your friend should do.

Part 4: Make a balanced argument

You will read a statement. Then you will prepare what you are going to say. You will then have 90 seconds to talk about the statement.
